Library of Birmingham

Fixings Plus were awarded the supply chain package for the envelope of this award winning and very hi-tech £188m building.
The design of the façade includes thousands of interlocking circles, this intricate steel lattice work represents both the city’s industrial past and its heritage in Jewellery making. It reflects and dissects the daylight to create ever-changing shadows on the library’s walls and floors.
The facade engineering design evolved through close collaboration with the architect and the other design engineering disciplines, from the initial concepts, through the building envelope procurement period and during the construction installation. This made for a challenging supply chain management exercise with very limited lead times in some cases.
This was evident towards the conclusion of the build, when we were asked to source, manufacture and supply a be-spoke, weather durable, black coated fixing and bracket system designed for the “night sky” effect on the underside of the large cantilevered entrance canopy.
